It’s a new month chock full of fun Houston events and activities. Here is a snapshot of a few things to do for free this weekend with friends and family:

Enjoy an outdoor flick — Another chance to view a movie under the stars! This Friday, it’s District D Night at the Movies featuring Avatar. This 8 p.m. movie at Miller Outdoor Theatre is sponsored by Houston District D council member Wanda Adams.

Create your own paper — This month’s free Hands-on Houston family activity features paper making. Learn how to pull a sheet of handmade paper from 100% cotton fiber. Browse free museums – It’s Bank of America’s first weekend freebie for cardholders. Get free admission September 4-5 at Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Zoo, and Houston Museum of Natural Science. Free admission for individual cardholder, not children.

Experience Czech heritage — Enjoy delicious Czech cuisine, music and dancing at Haak Winery for its free Czech Festival. The fun kicks off Saturday from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. featuring the music of Chris Rybak. Children and picnics are welcome! Haak Vineyards & Winery is located at 6310 Avenue T in Santa Fe.

Relax with a concert in the park — Houston performing group Mercury Baroque presents Brandenburg in the Park on September 4, 8 p.m. featuring four of the six Brandenburg Concertos by J.S. Bach. This event is at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Shop in the Heights — It’s the First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights this Saturday featuring three dozen local artists and craftsmen. The time changes June through September to an evening market from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Find all the fun at 548 W. 19th!

Shake your hips — If you love to move like a hula dancer, then check out the Discover Hoop Dance class at Discovery Green. Folks can shake their hips with hula hoops Sunday, September 5, at 10:30 a.m. Some hoops are provided, but bring your own if you can! Discovery Green is downtown at 1500 McKinney.

Engage in family museum fun — Art + Music = Fun is the theme of this month’s Target Free First Sunday at the Museum of Fine Arts. Hear performances in the galleries, create your own instrument, and watch the family flick, Girls Rock, at 4:30 p.m., a documentary about four girls at a rock-n-roll camp. Free admission from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Experience Bollywood — Enjoy the song, glitz, dance, and glamour of Bollywood Blast with an entertaining evening of fun for the entire family Sunday, September 5, at 8 p.m. This event will be at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park.

Here’s an interesting twist to encourage folks to get a flu shot this fall season… CVS is offering a free flu shot when you buy $30 worth of select Procter & Gamble products. P&G features many brands such as Tide, Pampers, Bounty, and more. No mention of how long this deal is available. Customers need an ExtraCare Card to get the free shot, but it’s a free sign-up at CVS.

Free Museums, Houston Zoo for Bank of America Cardholders September 4-5

It’s hard to believe September is just a day away! That means free Houston museums and Houston Zoo the first weekend of the month! Bank of America cardholders can take advantage of free admission September 4-5. In Houston area, that free admission includes the The Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Museum of Natural Science, the San Jacinto Museum of History in La Porte, as well as the Houston Zoo. Free admission is limited to Bank of America credit/debit card holders only, and not their children.

Bank of America’s national program–”Museums on Us”–provides free admission the first full weekend of every month to 120 participating museums.

Houston Texans’ Kickoff Party Sept. 5 in Kemah

Get in the football spirit at the Houston Texans’ Kickoff Party this Sunday, September 5, on the Kemah Boardwalk. The festivities from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. feature autograph signings, live bands, prize giveaways and interactive games. See the Houston Texans players, cheerleaders, Toro the mascot, the Bull Pin Pep Band, and Texans Ambassadors. The Boardwalk is at 215 Kipp Ave. in Kemah.

Revised Free Day Schedule at Houston Zoo

Ever been to the Houston Zoo on one of the five holidays with free admission? Things can get pretty crazy with parking, crowds, and extra personnel required for Zoo staff, Houston police, and METRO police.

With that in mind, the Houston Zoo created a revised Free Day Schedule beginning September 1. Guests can now enter the Houston Zoo for free the first Tuesday of each month after 2 p.m. until closing. The first Free Tuesday afternoon will be September 7. The Zoo stays open until 7 p.m. during Daylight Savings Time and until 6 p.m. during Central Standard Time. The Houston Zoo anticipates this change will be better for everyone — especially now with 12 free days a year! Zoo admission increased to $11/adults and $7 for kids ages 2-12 last December, so free days are awesome! The Houston Zoo is located in Hermann Park.
