Free Houston Weekend Fun February 5-7
IT’S FRIDAY once again! Thank goodness… There are a variety of ways to stay busy this weekend with family and friends without spending any money. Here is a snapshot of a few options:
Buy local — Heights’ First Saturday returns the first Saturday of each month in the Heights neighborhood, a quirky destination with unique businesses. The day of shopping, food and fun includes First Saturday Arts Market with local artists from the surrounding area selling their creative things. Find an online map at HeightsFirstSaturday.com
Go fly a kite — Sugar Land is sponsoring its first Cultural Kite Festival on Saturday, February 6 (rescheduled from1/16). Special activities from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. include a miniature kite museum, kite flying lessons, and competitions as well as cultural performances. Kids can attend a kite-making workshop and take home their flying masterpiece. This event is at Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd.
Build a wooden car display — Home Depot sponsors free “How-to” workshops for kids the first Satuday of each month. February 6 features a wooden car display. Workshops last from 9 a.m. to noon, and kids leave with their project, orange apron and achievement pin. Find the closest Home Depot here.
Craft a pin – This Saturday, February 6, join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for Hands-On Houston, a free craft-activity open house for the whole family on the first Saturday of every month. Children and adults can create beautiful, colored pins to wear as a brooch or badge using a simulated enamel technique on metal foil. All ages are welcome, and materials will be provided. Groove to free jazz – Don’t miss Da Camera of Houston’s Free Family Concert Sunday, February 7, at the Jewish Community Center. Hailed as “one of the best young jazz musicians” by the Boston Globe, Allison can entertain crowds of all ages. This interactive event with Allison and his quintet, Man Size Safe, begins at 3 p.m. in JCC’s Kaplan Theater, 5601 S. Braeswood.
Be political – See Governor Rick Perry and Sarah Palin right here in Houston! Attend a free rally in NW Houston Sunday, February 7, 2 p.m. Sign up for free tickets here. This rally is part of the Governor’s re-election campaign held at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress, south of Hwy 290. Will call ticket distribution begins at 1 p.m. and doors open at 1:30 p.m. for the 2 p.m. event.
