Free Houston Weekend Fun March 12-14

Many Houston venues are getting in gear with new spring schedules — and the weather looks perfect this weekend.  Here are a few free things to do in Houston with your family and friends:

Celebrate photographyOpening night of the FotoFest 2010 Grand Opening exhibit begins Friday, March 12, from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Enjoy food, drink, and music by The Gourds.  Browse the exhibit, Whatever was Splendid: New American Photographs.  This free event is held at FotoFest headquarters, 1113 Vine Street.

Catch a movie under the stars — Each month, Sugar Land Town Center hosts a free outdoor movie.  This Saturday, March 13, the free feature film is Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs!

Meet Bevo XIVSnap a photo of The University of Texas mascot right in Houston!.  BevoXIV is making an appearance outside the University Co-op in Uptown Park from 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.  The University-Co-Op Houston is located at 1131 Uptown Park Boulevard.  Donations help the Bevo Endowment.

Craft free bead projects — Michael’s is hosting a free bead event Saturday, March 13, from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Each hour begins a new bead project: bracelet, two necklaces, and a thank-you card.

Wearin’ of the Green — Celebrate the Irish a few days early at Houston’s downtown St. Patrick’s Day parade, Saturday, March 13.  The 51st parade features 100+ entries beginning at Minute Maid Park at noon.

Twist and flexYoga in the Park resumes at Discovery Green each Saturday, 9:30 a.m. The outdoor class is led by TUTS’ instructor Jerry Randall. Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney downtown.

Party on the bayou — The 38th annual Buffalo Bayou Regatta kicks off Saturday, March 13, at 9 a.m. as Texas’ largest canoe and kayak race at San Felipe west of Voss.  Gather around the finish line from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at downtown’s Sesquicentennial Park at Bagby and Preston. Cheer on the racers and enjoy free live music and the awards ceremony.

Show your Irish spirit – Enjoy another parade this weekend for the Irish-lovin’ folks!  The 32nd annual Great Northwest St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m. on FM1960.  This community parade supports the Cypress Creek EMS and has raised more than $100,000 in the last five years.  The parade heads down FM1960 from Champions Forest to Kuykendahl.

Jam to the tunes — Enjoy a family-friendly Sunday in the Park concert at Discovery Green Sunday, March 14, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.  This week’s performance features Umbrella Man, sponsored by Four Seasons.  Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney downtown.

Free concert by the Fab 5, a Beatles tribute band, at Miller outdoor theatre tonight at 7:30. They had a concert last November at Discovery Green that was a blast.
