Free Houston Weekend Fun October 16-18

WE HAVE COOLER weather just in time for the weekend!  Here are a variety of free activities to keep you entertained this weekend with family and friends:

Gaze at an outdoor movie — Wanna see a Disney cartoon under the stars at Rice University stadium?  Bring your family to the Starlight Movie showing Lilo & Stitch on a jumbo screen at Rice Stadium Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m.  Picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs are all welcome!  The stadium is located at 6100 Main Street.  Parking is $1 at the stadium. Enjoy a multicultural music program– Attend a violin and piano recital sponsored by the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) Friday, October 16, at 8 p.m.  The duet MESTIZO performs classical works as well as folk music from their native Oaxaca in innovative chamber music format. The performance is at MECA, 1900 Kane Street, 77007, 713.802.9370.

View a silent film at the Green — Houston Public Radio’s monthly Silent Film Concert Series continues this Friday, October 16, with a screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.  Two Star Symphony accompanies the 1920s film. The event kicks off at 8 p.m. at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney.

Jam around the worldOne World Music Jam brings live music and dance performances from around the world Saturday, October 17, including Latino, African, zydeco, blues, Asian, European, and more.  The jam is from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theatre, Caroline Street at Golf Course Dr. in Hermann Park.  This event is sponsored by KPFT 90.1FM.

Feast your eyes on the dragon — Celebrate the 6th annual Gulf Coast Dragon Boat Regatta this weekend, October 17-18, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This free event features more than 40 teams racing in dragon boats (a.k.a. fancy decorated 40-ft. canoes).  Don’t miss the festivities for spectators including arts and crafts, music, a Pink Ducky race, cultural performances, and a kids’ zone.  The festival is held at the Fluor Daniel campus in Sugar Land (1 Fluor Daniel Dr.). Explore Houston’s Historic DistrictA Night at Market Square celebrates Houston’s downtown Historic District Saturday, October 17, from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Explore the neighborhood’s watering holes, unique restaurants, and live music venues.  Free admission — and free parking if you enter the Market Square garage (300 Milam) between 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.  $5 pontoon boat cruises, too!  Map, details, and participating venues here.

Make a silly scarecrow — Bring your kids to Lakeshore Learning’s Fall Fun Saturday, October 17, for hands-on activities, silly scarecrow craft, and games for all!  The activities last from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Post Oak, Clear Lake, and Conroe locations.

Travel across the ocean — The International Festival of Fort Bend enables visitors to experience the culture, food, and crafts from 30 different cultures.  Enjoy multicultural dances, children’s activities, ethnic food booths, arts and crafts and more Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.  This indoor family event is held at Stafford Centre, 10505 Cash Road in Stafford.

Celebrate American icons — It’s all about American Icons at Bayou Bend’s Family Day this Sunday, October 18, from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Families can celebrate American iconography with music, storytelling performances, historical re-enactors, crafts based on famous American symbols, as well as tours with objects highlighted in the house.  Bayou Bend, 1 Westcott Street at Memorial.

International Festival of Ft. Bend — the kids’ entertainment (inflatables) will be outdoors, while the performances and food will be indoors. Come say hi to BounceU outside!
