Houston Thanksgiving Week Activities
HAVE FAMILY coming in town to celebrate Thanksgiving this year? Your menu is probably plannned down to the details — but what about how to entertain your guests once the food and football games are over Thursday? Here are a few activities to consider in Houston for Thanksgiving week:
Houston’s Thanksgiving Parade — dubbed the H.E.B. Holiday Parade — kicks off in downtown Houston Thursday morning at 9 a.m. It’s celebrating 60 years this year. Viewing is free along the parade route. Or just catch the live telecast on Channel 11, KHOU.
Catch the Uptown Holiday Lighting Thursday in Uptown Houston for the spectacular annual kick off of the holiday season. Music and concessions begin at 4 p.m. but the anticipated event is at 7 p.m. when Santa lights Post Oak Boulevard’s 80 trees with half-a-million twinkling lights. Fireworks will top the night. Uptown Houston is on Post Oak Boulevard between San Felipe and Westheimer.
If you love the idea of skating outdoors, then head to The Ice at Discovery Green, which opens November 26 through January 18. $10 covers the skating fee for kids and adults.
Don’t forget it’s Free Day at the Houston Zoo on Friday, November 27 — one of the attraction’s five free days each year. Hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Enjoy Home for the Holidays in Old Town Spring through Sunday, November 29, with live music, complimentary horse and carriage rides, Santa photos, train ride, and all the lights and holiday decorations. Carriage and horse rides continue each weekend through December 20.
Only in Houston! Get ready for the first Illuminated Art Car Parade this Saturday evening beginning at 9 p.m. Sounds like a blast for “night owl” art car lovers. Dubbed “Gloworama,” the parade features a procession of illuminated art cars and a 3D light show. The parade begins at Avenida de las Americas near the George R. Brown Convention Center. Live music from The Invinceable Czars playing “Nutcracker Suite” at Discovery Green. Parade and light show are free.

Just a quick update to your Houston Zoo posting – the Zoo is free on the Friday after Thanksgiving. However, during this time of year the Zoo closes at 6 p.m.
