While we tend to think of financial planning and wealth management as things only adults should care and think about, it’s just as important for kids to understand money and how to keep it from a young age if they want to build wealth throughout their lifetimes. For that reason, the Associated Credit Union of Texas is offering a free financial literacy summer camps for Houston-area students grades 3 – 12. If you want your kids to understand financial literacy, enrolling them in a completely FREE summer camp is a great way to start.
Building financial literacy just when kids are about to enter their first jobs is of critical importance if children are to grow up into financially responsible adults. Schools often overlook this important part of children’s development, and many parents are surprised to find that the majority of students are never taught basic financial principles as part of their basic education. As a result, many kids grow up to enter the workforce without ever having developed core financial literacy.
The STAR Academy summer camps offer kids hands-on age appropriate activities designed to help them make smarter decisions about managing their money. Some of the activities are aimed to help kids understand what it takes to start a business, while others teach kids the meaning of financial literacy and how important it is to keep and understand a balanced budget.
Camps are divided into three main grade level categories: grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12. Locations for each camp are spread out throughout the greater Houston area, so you should be able to find one near you without a problem.
The STAR Academy financial literacy camps are one-day sessions and generally run from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. two days a week between Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, August 7. Lunch is provided at some sessions. See the camp’s official website for a full listing of dates and locations and enrollment information.
