The best grocery store chain in America resides in the Lone Star State.
H-E-B was recently named the country’s top grocer by Food & Wine, with the magazine pointing to the Texas-based chain’s affordable prices and high-quality brand lineup.
“There are those who think they are shopping at the best supermarkets in the country, and then there are the H-E-B shoppers who know this for a fact,” the magazine reviewer wrote.
The honors, which come during a global health pandemic when grocery chains are figuring out how to safely operate, come on the heels of snagging top honors by a global consumer search company Dunnhumby earlier this year. The grocery customer survey was a big one for H-E-B, as the San Antonio-based chain knocked Trader Joe’s off the top spot and also beat Amazon and Costco.
“What was already good—the affordable prices on a wide range of high-quality own-brand products, the in-store tortillerias, the excellent curbside pickup program—seemed even more important now,” the author stated in reference to H-E-B’s service throughout this pandemic.
There are more than 340 H-E-B stores across Texas, as well as some locations in northeast Mexico. The company also operates an upscale organic and fine foods retailers akin to Whole Foods called Central Market. In 2018, the chain did $28 billion in sales.
Forbes ranks the company ranks No. 11 of America’s largest private companies. The company remains owned by the Florence Butt family.
H-E-B didn’t make Food and Wine’s list last year, but its Central Market chain ranked No. 2.
