How To Enjoy 4th of July in Galveston TX

Turning July 4th into an all-day celebration in Galveston probably seems like a piece of cake. Catch an early morning parade before heading to the beach. You don’t even need to stay on the Seawall. Galveston Island has a few beaches open to residents and visitors. Two of my favorites are Stewart and East Beach.

When you get hungry, there’s no shortage of places on the island to grab a bite to eat. Seawall Blvd is lined with restaurants and small eateries. You can even grab a meal to go and enjoy it on the Seawall, though watch out for seagulls. The beach birds can be pests when you’re trying to eat.

Since it’s the Fourth of July, fireworks are probably on your evening agenda. Don’t worry, you don’t need to leave the island to watch some truly spectacular fireworks displays. Best of all, you get to watch the fireworks explode over the Gulf and Galveston Bay.

Start your 4th of July off with a morning parade on Galveston Island. The weather is still sort of cool, in other words, temperatures are only in the 80s instead of the 90s. While the 4th of July parade isn’t as grand as the Mardi Gras festivities, it’s still a sight you don’t want to miss.

After spending the morning with other parade goers, head to Texas City, it’s a short drive from the island, especially if you use the causeway. I really don’t recommend trying to get to the island or leave by ferry. The lines are long and you may end up spending most of the 4th of July holiday waiting for your turn to board the ferry.

When it’s time for fireworks, my favorite place to be is at the Seawall on Galveston Island. This is a show I look forward to every July 4th.

The City of LaPorte isn’t far from Galveston and it’s also a great place to catch a parade. The City of La Porte July 4th Celebrations kick off at 10 am. This gives you plenty of time to wake up, grab some coffee, and head to Sylvan Beach.

The parade is a ton of fun. You can expect to see everything from decorated floats and fire trucks to children on bicycles. So, grab a small flag or some sparklers and head to La Porte on the 4th of July morning. After the parade you can join in some activities, there are even ones geared for little ones. Live music is also featured, along with a free hot dog lunch. You can even turn your visit into an entire day and evening event. Fireworks go off around 9 pm over the beach.

If you’re not an early riser but still want to make your 4th of July a day-long celebration, the Freedom Rocks Fest may be just the event for you. Things are a little slow in the morning, making it the ideal time to enjoy the beach and gulf views. However, in the afternoon and evening, things start rocking at the festival.

There’s something magical about a beach concert and it’s something I recommend everyone experience at least once.

You can enjoy music from some of rock’s biggest legends. A few of the tribute bands performing throughout the day and evening include Nightbird a tribute band to Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. Supernaut, a Black Sabbath tribute band will also be performing along with Big Shot playing Billy Joel’s greatest hits. If you love Foreigner, you’re not going to be disappointed. Double Vision is also hitting the stage.

When: Thursday, July 3-4, 2024 | 10 am – 8 pm

Where: Lagoonfest Texas, 12600 Crystal View Blvd, Texas City, TX 77568

How Much: $20 – $38

Like many visitors to Galveston Island, one of my favorite places is Seawall Blvd. If you’re not familiar with the island, this is the boulevard running along the Gulf. Along with plenty of beach access, you’re also in the heart of most of the action.

Unlike several other communities, Galveston likes to stand out. The island’s 4th of July parade is an even event capped by fireworks later in the evening.

Seawall Blvd is also the best place to see the Galveston Island Independence Day Parade

The parade starts at 6 pm and follows the Seawall. I recommend trying to find a spot to watch the parade around 22nd or 23rd streets. You should expect to see plenty of floats, decorated vehicles, and performers. If early morning parades aren’t high on your to-do list, this one may be perfect for you.
